Stress can lead to mental health disorders.

The focus of this discourse is that the human mind, with its limited coping facilities, is at the center of all these challenges. In Africa, we mourn the dead and even mount big ceremonies in their memories, but no care is instituted for the mental health challenges of survivors of road and air accidents as well as suicide bomb attacks.

Nigeria has one of the largest and gallant army of soldiers who have fought to keep our nation together but with no adequate care for the attendant mental distress they live with, consequent of combat experiences. Survivors of armed robbery attacks have considerable mental distress which has made some families to abandon their new buildings for rented apartments.

 There is a whole  family of psychiatric disorders traceable to exceptionally stressful life events; and, depending on the duration and peculiarity of symptom, there is  the acute stress disorder and post traumatic stress disorder. Basic symptoms include disturbed concentration, disorientation, emotional numbness, anger, panic anxiety and despair, among others.

Post traumatic stress disorder has the listed symptoms but in addition has emotional numbness and blunting, detachment from others, re-experiencing symptoms when such persons involuntarily relive aspects of the traumatic experience in a very vivid and distressing way as flashbacks in which the person acts or feels as if the events were reoccurring, nightmares and intrusive images from the traumatic event, just as some actually avoid activities and situations reminiscent of the event.

Men experience more traumatic events than women, but the women experience higher impact events. The critical challenge in recognising this disorder is that the clinical picture is often marked by substance abuse and depressive illness. The view of a layman is that traumatic events cannot fully explain this abnormal mental state, but literature and clinical practice have established a spatial relationship between these events and the occurrence of these disorders.  The experience for those directly involved or witnesses carry a possibility of actual or threatening death or serious injury or threats to the physical integrity of the self and others. We should realise that survivors of traumatic events require mental health management and should be appropriately referred.

Our culture and religious orientation encourage the suppression of the emotional experience, thereby militating against a speedy recovery. Untrained counsellors get them to deny the reality of their feelings which impairs the principle of “working through” the trauma. The Federal Government needs to urgently incorporate mental health programme in the rehabilitation of the survivors of suicide bomb attacks, in addition to economic empowerment and social repositioning for those who have suffered significant handicaps as a result of the crisis.

This is important because economic deprivation and loss of social role functioning are potent factors of poor recovery. The amnesty programme being proposed cannot be successfully implemented unless a preliminary rehabilitation of survivors of the attacks is undertaken.

The ministry of defence should have a strong mental health programme to cater for soldiers, both serving and those retiring. Cases of rape should be promptly reported, not just for prosecution but for timely rehabilitation.

Our state ministries of health should be at the center of public health campaigns in managing survivors of disasters, as they have input in disaster management effort.

In conclusion, the relevance of the mental health professionals in primary health care is undisputable, especially for public enlightenment.

Late Goldies' belongings to be auctioned tomorrow.

Barely 2 months after the late  Nigerian singer's death,her belongings are to be auctioned.
The family of late Big Brother Africa housemate and Hip hop star, Goldie Harvey will on Wednesday auction all her belongings. The family said this in a statement on Tuesday.




The statement signed by the family representative, Deji Adetayo, stated that although the singer did not leave a will, she had had an agreement with her husband, Leonard Harvey to auction her remaining items.

Adetayo said the proceeds from the sales would be donated to charity


Adetayo said, “There will be a garage sale at Goldie’s house located at 30B, Ologunkutere Street, Parkview Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos on May 1, 2013

A 5 year-old girl dies after being raped

 An official says a 5-year-old girl has died after being raped in central India.

District official Bharat Yadav says the girl suffered cardiac arrest late on Monday at a hospital in Nagpur city where she was being treated for injuries from the assault.

He says the girl was allegedly raped by a friend of her parents and dumped at a farm near their home.

Yadav says two men have been arrested.

India has seen a recent sharp rise in numbers of rapes and sexual crimes against women and children. Officials say the spike has resulted from more people reporting the crime.
Meanwhile,a protest against rape has started going on in India by an organisation,check the photo after the cut.

An ESUT student drags EFCC to court

Enugu-  A university student, Ifeanyi Okoye, on Monday dragged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to a Federal High Court in Enugu for alleged character assassination.

Okoye, of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), filed the suit alleging character assassination and a breach of his fundamental human rights.

The counsel to the plaintiff, Ralph Nnamu, said his client was arrested by the EFCC at a cyber café where he was sourcing information for his postgraduate project.

Nnamu said that on Jan. 21, 2011, operatives of the EFCC stormed the cyber café and whisked his client away to unknown destination.

He said that the operatives alleged that his client defrauded one foreign firm located in London, Global Ventures, of N10 million.

``It is unfortunate that up till now the EFCC is yet to furnish this court with clear evidence showing that my client truly committed the crime he was accused of.

``He has been going to the cyber café for his project work since his enrolment as a post graduate student.

``I don’t know where the EFCC sourced their information which they relied upon to prosecute my client,” he said.

The counsel to the EFCC, Ethelbert Onunze, said it was a case that did not require much legal tussle.
He said the case was simple and straight forward as far as cases associated with cyber crime were concerned.
``The operatives of the EFCC acted on an alert by a concerned citizen who had been furnishing the commission with the activities of the plaintiff at the cyber café on weekly basis.

``The accused heinously defrauded the foreign firm of the sum of N10 million, claiming that he will supply them with raw materials for production of textiles.

``It was at the point of collecting the sum of N700 000 meant for the transportation of the said raw materials that the EFCC arrested him.

``The accused never worked or dealt with any firm here in Nigeria that was associated with the production of textile materials,” he said.

The presiding judge, Justice M.L. Shuaibu, adjourned the case till Oct. 9 for further hearing.

An  Asaba-based couple have been arrested for allegedly selling their new  born twins for N200,000 each.
The incident, according to the Delta State Police Command’s spokesman, Mr. Lucky Uyabeme, took place last Sunday, while the buyer of the twins based in Lagos and a Social Welfare Officer who allegedly brokered the transaction have equally been arrested.
According to Uyabeme, “on Sunday, at about 3.10 p.m, the Chairman of Asaba Community Policing, Mr. Anthony Okonkevo, arrested a couple, Augustine Agbona and his wife, Ebere, living at the back of NTA Asaba, for child stealing and handed them over to the Divisional Police Officer ‘A’ Division police station, Asaba.

“However, police investigation revealed that the said Ebere Agbona, delivered a set of twin babies a boy and a girl a few days earlier, at Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Asaba and sold them to one Anwulie Okogwu, who resides in Lagos at the rate of N200,000 each through one Ebele Ofuani of Ogwashi-Uku.

“Meanwhile, the said Ebere Ofuani has been arrested and the babies recovered and handed over to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Welfare Asaba for proper care.

Weird:Woman hides a loaded gun in vagina

Christie Dawn Harris was arrested for drug trafficking.When searched,a loaded  gun was found in her cunt.
According to Mediatakeout,the 28 years old allegedly had the weapon pointing up inside herself with just the handle sticking out as she was searched in custody in Ada, Oklahoma. The police repair says she had tried to avoid a full search by saying she had her period but instead was found with the weapon with three live rounds inside and one spent shell. Harris had been arrested with a number woman after allegedly being found with drugs during a routine stop.
She was charged with various drug and weapons charges.

 A strong 6.6 magnitude earthquake hit a remote, mostly rural and mountainous area of southwestern China’s Sichuan province on Saturday, killing at least 156 people and injuring about 5,500 close to where a big quake killed almost 70,000 people in 2008.

   The earthquake, China’s worst in three years, occurred at 8.02 a.m. (0002 GMT) in Lushan county near Ya’an city and the epicenter had a depth of 12 km (7.5 miles), the U.S. Geological Survey said.

  The quake was felt by residents in neighboring provinces and in the provincial capital of Chengdu, causing many people to rush out of buildings, according to accounts on China’s Twitter-like Sina Weibo micro-blogging service.
